Renault eyes third spot in Indian auto market

The French car manufacturer Renault aims to secure the third position in the Indian car Industry. The first is already occupied by Maruti and there are different contenders including Hyundai for the second. Renault India is also soon to launch its sedan, Renault Fluence which will be its first car after the breakup of the tie up with Mahindra and Mahindra. Renault also proposes to launch five models in the next 18 months. Three of these are expected to be launched this year followed by two next year.

It is said that the car maker is eyeing third position in the Indian car market in terms of brand image and not in terms of car sales figures. In order to make it a reality, Renault India with its partner Nissan is said to have already inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government regarding set up of a facility at Oragadam, near Chennai. The French major is said to have invested around Rs 2,500 cr in developing this facility and targets an expenditure of about Rs4,500 cr till 2025. The plant is currently operational and has one assembly line besides another coming up and has an installed capacity of 400,000 cars per year. It is said that Renault will be assembling Renault Fluence here, the parts of which are imported in completely knocked down state. However, some of the parts such as power steering, casting and forging have been sourced from India as well. The company is said to have shown interest in stepping up the sourcing from India. It is currently sourcing parts of around 40 million dollars.
