Yep, the title is confusing as it is related to small cars, but wait, these cars are big as well. It means that the small cars are big cars, because their small proportions are made to look big, and god this is so confusing, courtesy to their desire to look like SUVs. Now this is not only the case with Indian automotive market but throughout the world. The line between SUVs and sedans is thinning day by day and crossovers are the sole reason behind this. Firstly, you get a car that looks like an SUV and secondly you get one that doesn’t suck fuel out of your tank like a vacuum cleaner and moreover is sized like a sedan.
This was the story of crossover, what I am talking about here is that this fashion has trickled to the lower boundary as well. Yes, the superminis and Renault Kwid is a superb example of such cars, it's a small car that looks big (is big in its category). The high bonnet and boot, the prominent wheel arches, somewhat boxy proportions, all lends it that dominating appeal.
Renault is just a start, there are more manufacturers who are are flocking into this sort of designing. Take an example of Maruti’s Ignis, their new Alto and the next gen Vitara, these are all aimed at Indian consumer in near future. Then there are other cars like Honda BR-V, Datsun's Go based crossover, etc.
Mahindra is the synonym for SUVs in India and they certainly can’t refrain themselves from making crossovers. Especially when it has been announced that Mahindra will focus on making their vehicles more SUV-ish. This is exactly what they are known for. The latest examples are KUV 100 and TUV 300 (not exactly a crossover but lies in the same category). With rhyming names and typical SUV setup.
Just In case!
Now KUV 100 won’t be a direct rival to Renault Kwid, but just in case one needs to choose between the top end variant of Kwid and the base variant of KUV 100, this might help. Now, according to the analysis by my friend Raunak Awasthi KUV 100 could start somewhere at INR 4.20 lacs. Renault Kwid is priced at INR 3.53 lacs for the top end variant and it will miss out on interior space when compared to KUV 100. Moreover, KUV gets 6 seats, however, it is not confirmed whether it has 6 seat belts also so as to make this seating proposition worthwhile. Then again it is expected to get a bigger boot and better road dynamics than the Kwid , simply because of bigger wheels and a wider track.
