Renault, the car maker from France is expanding its Energy Family and has just announced the first three cylinder engine of this family. The newfangled Renault three cylinder engine has a displacement of just 899cc, is constructed entirely with aluminum and features a turbocharged petrol motor. Being called as Energy TCe90, this engine is the eighth engine of the Energy family of Renault which has been launched within a period a 16 months. Like all the other engines of the Energy family the TCe90 is also bestowed with expertise and breakthrough technologies from Formula 1. The mind behind the conception and engineering of the TCe powertrains with 3 and 4 cylinders is Jean-Philippe Mercier. He specializes in some key areas which are, comprehensive knowledge of the ‘square engine architecture’, guaranteed reliability and reducing friction which is possible due to the low-friction coefficient materials used in F1 such as piston skirts with graphite coating, cam followers with DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating and piston rings coated with PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition).

Jean’s expertise in these areas is the reason behind the successful development of TCe90; this engine is very powerful and is capable of pumping out 100 HP/liter of power which is first of its kind for the engine of this size. The TCe90 engine with a displacement of 899cc is capable of pumping out a peak power of 90 BHP at 5000 RPM and a peak torque of 35 NM at 1650-5500 RPM. Among other engines present in the market the TCe90 engine is the fastest in delivering the airflow ‘tumble’ effect inside the cylinders. Apart from this, the engine offers virtually instantaneous combustion which exploits the advantage of the downsizing to three cylinders. The other value-adding features supported by the Energy TCe90 engine are start-stop technology and thermal management technology.
