Update: 2018 Hyundai Santro Official Details Revealed; Bookings Begin From October 10
Hyundai is all set to launch a new entry-level hatchback, codenamed AH2, in October this year. To name this upcoming hatchback, which is touted to be the Santro successor, the carmaker launched a month-long online naming campaign called Naamkaran on 16 August 2018, inviting suggestions.
Since the beginning of the campaign, the carmaker has reportedly received over 1.5 lakh entries, out of which around 30 per cent have suggested the name ‘Santro’. The confirmation comes from Puneet Anand, senior general manager and group head of marketing at Hyundai Motor India. He reportedly said, “It is clear that Santro has emerged the top favourite among respondents and takes up the single largest chunk of the entries received thus far.”
If the AH2 is christened the ‘Santro,’ it will mark the re-entry of the Santo nameplate in the Indian market. The Santro hatchback was discontinued in 2014, 16 years after its introduction in 1998. While we will have to wait for a few weeks to know the name of the hatchback, here is all we know about the AH2 so far:
- The hatchback will continue to feature a tall boy design like its predecessor, but now it is likely to be styled along Hyundai’s latest Fluidic 2.0 design philosophy
- It will feature the cascading grille
- It will be a petrol-only offering and is likely to be powered by a 1.0-litre petrol engine
- This motor is expected to produce 66PS and 95Nm with a 5-speed MT. An AMT will be on offer
- Hyundai might offer features like a touchscreen infotainment system and DRLs in the top variant
- The ‘Santro’ is expected to be priced from Rs 3.5 lakh and will take on the likes of the Renault Kwid 1.0L, Maruti Alto K10, Datsun redi-GO 1.0L and Maruti WagonR
