September 2023 was a good month for carmakers in terms of units manufactured, and all models in the top 15 best-selling cars crossed the 10,000-unit mark. As you can expect, the list was dominated by SUVs, with some oddballs being one crossover SUV, and just one sedan.

The Maruti Baleno, with close to 18,500 units sold, took the top spot in September 2023’s sales list. That said, its year-on-year (YoY) figure dipped by 5 percent.

While the Maruti Wagon R moved up a rank when the month-on-month (MoM) numbers are considered, its YoY figure went down by 19 percent.

At over 15,000 units sold, the refreshed Tata Nexon took the third place on the sales chart. It saw a growth in both MoM and YoY numbers, with the latter registering an uptick of 6 percent. This tally includes the demand for both standard Nexon and the Tata Nexon EV.

The Maruti Brezza just managed to cross the 15,000-unit mark as well, closely tailing its Tata rival. While its YoY figure dropped by 3 percent, it saw a positive movement in terms of MoM number.

Last month’s table-topper, the Maruti Swift, slipped to the fifth spot in September 2023 sales with over 14,700 units sold. That said, its YoY number did go up by 23 percent.

The Maruti Dzire, Maruti Ertiga and Tata Punch were closely placed to each other, with their individual sales numbers falling between 13,000 and 14,000 units. All three models registered a strong growth in YoY numbers, with the Dzire and Ertiga gaining the maximum of 45 percent.

Two Hyundai SUVs, namely the Creta and Venue, took the next two spots with their total sales ranging between 12,000 and 13,000 units, respectively. Do note that the Venue’s numbers are inclusive of the sales of the Venue N Line as well.

The next four spots were occupied by the Mahindra Scorpio, Maruti Grand Vitara, Maruti Fronx and Maruti Eeco, with each recording total sales between 11,000 and 12,000 units. The Scorpio’s numbers include data for both the Scorpio Classic and Scorpio N.

The Maruti Grand Vitara saw the highest YoY growth of 146 percent, since it made its market debut towards the end of September 2022. It completed one year of presence in our market in the same period.

With total sales just crossing the 10,500-unit mark, the Kia Seltos took the 15th and last spot on this list. Its YoY sales dropped by 4 percent.
