The compact SUV segment is currently the hottest in the Indian automotive industry as of today. With a rise in competition at a blistering pace, the manufacturers from around the world and India, are striving hard to make their presence felt in the category. Toyota being one of the oldest players in the industry, is now finally planning to enter the compact SUV segment.
As per conversation with Times of India, Toyota has confirmed to launch a compact SUV for the Indian market, research and development of which has been under operation at its headquarters in Japan. N Raja, senior VP and director marketing, Toyota Kirloskar Motors said “We do not have anything off-the-shelf globally in the compact SUV segment. We are giving our inputs (to HQ in Japan) and there is a favourable consideration that this is a growing phenomenon in India."
Though the company official also stated that the development phase will last 4 to 5 years. Currently, there are Ford EcoSport and Mahindra TUV300 in this category, while a key player Maruti Vitara Brezza is fully prepared to set the sub-4 meter category of SUVs on fire. Hyundai has also started working on the same concept, so in turn Toyota has to prepare something unique and out of the box to nail these cars.
But as of now, the focus of the company is on releasing its next big product i.e. Innova Crysta, which is scheduled to be launched somewhere in the second quarter.
