Volkswagen India, a subsidiary of Germany based leading car maker Volkswagen, is in the process of upgrading its popular cars in India, mainly, Volkswagen Jetta and Passat, as the new emission norms are going to be implemented in India by the starting of next month. The existing 105bhp PD engine will be replaced by a 2.0L 140bhp PD, which is compatible with the new BS-IV emission norms.
The new engine is claimed to be provide better fuel efficiency and at the same time the models are less noisy compared to the previous ones. Volkswagen Jetta would be upgraded to a new 16-valve 2.0 common rail turbo diesel engine which produces maximum power of 139 bhp. The Jetta model would continue with Manual transmission as the company is not going to add an automatic transmission to it. On the other hand the petrol engine of the Jetta will be powered with 1.6L petrol engine same as that of Skoda Laura.
Besides the engine, some cosmetic changes would be made in these cars including a new front grille, a new bumper with latest design and a newly designed hood. With this, it is expected that some up-gradations will be made in the interiors as well.
Volkswagen is also planning to expand its operations in India and it recently launched its flagship car Volkswagen Polo in the country. Polo is a premium hatchback model which is now competing with some of the most popular cars in India in this segment including Maruti Ritz, Maruti Swift, Maruti A-Star, Hyundai i10, Hyundai i20, Chevrolet Beat, Ford Figo and Fiat Punto. Besides this many new car models are also in their final stage of launch in the hatchback segment including Toyota Etios and a new small car from Honda.
