The Porsche 918 Spyder is a modern day motoring benchmark that completed the 20.6 kilometre-long Nurburgring Nordschleife track in a blistering 6 minutes and 57 seconds. This German hybrid hypercar is all about big numbers, but for one Porsche dealer in the United States of America, the only number that mattered was that of the police. Francisco Gonsalez-Velasquez, a 22-year-old man from Salt Lake City, stole a Porsche 918 Spyder worth $1.7 million (approximately Rs 11 crore) and carried out the crime in broad daylight!
In what seems to be a surprisingly easy theft, the accused smashed the dealership’s window, grabbed the car’s keys and simply drove right out. Fortunately, he didn’t get too far and was caught by the police later that same night, around 3km away from the showroom.
The car in question was a custom ‘Weissach Package’ equipped model, which gets magnesium wheels, lighter brakes and titanium bolts for the chassis, making it around 41kg lighter than the standard 918 Spyder.
Rivaling the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1, the Porsche 918 Spyder is a limited edition car. Powering this mid-engined marvel is a 4.6-litre V8 engine that works together with two electric motors. The combined output comes in at 887PS of power and nearly 1280Nm of torque, sent to the rear wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The car does the 0 to 100 kmph run in less than 3 seconds and can hit a claimed top speed of around 345 kmph.
