Volkswagen, Germany based car maker, begins to construct its building at its Chattanooga plant. It is the part of $577-million incentives package. In some upcoming weeks, Chattanooga plant will have a huge large building. This is just a perfect start, I have seen many such projects and this is the best start we ever had, according to Thilo Brockhaus, VW's project manager for the Chattanooga auto assembly plant.
Workers have started the work and gave some perspective as to how the Chattanooga project is moving along compared with others. This $30-million building will house the auto assembly plant's paint shop which will have the capacity for up to 1,000 vehicles per day and will use water-based paints.
Volkswagen hired Walbridge as it's general contractor to build the paint shop. The paint shop building is expected to be weather-tight by September which means workers can then begin installing the electrical, mechanical and process systems. That, along with body and assembly shop construction, will continue into 2010.
