The VW Polo 1.0-litre turbo-petrol AT has a claimed mileage of 16.47kmpl. Does it stay true to it in the real world as well?

Volkswagen introduced the BS6-updated Polo in March 2020. It is now a petrol-only offering and comes with either a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine or a new 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit. The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol unit that was earlier offered on the GT variant has now been discontinued. The carmaker has also replaced the previously offered 7-speed DSG gearbox with a new 6-speed torque converter unit. We took the Polo GT variant, equipped with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine mated to the 6-speed AT, for our fuel efficiency test and here’s what the numbers reveal:

    Engine

    1.0-litre Turbo-petrol

    Power

    110PS

    Torque

    175Nm

    Transmission

    6-speed AT

    Claimed fuel efficiency

    16.47kmpl

    Tested fuel efficiency (City)

    14.05kmpl

    Tested fuel efficiency (Highway)

    17.69kmpl

While the 6-speed AT-equipped Polo GT delivered a mileage of a little over 14kmpl in the city, it surpassed the ARAI-claimed figure by more than 1kmpl on the highway.

Let’s see how it performed in mixed driving scenarios:

    Mileage

    City:Highway (50:50)

    City:Highway (25:75)

    City:Highway (75:25)

    15.66kmpl

    16.61kmpl

    14.81kmpl

If you use the hatchback majorly in the cities, the Polo GT with the AT gearbox will return a fuel efficiency of around 15kmpl. On the other hand, if it is used mainly on wide stretches of roads and highways, the fuel efficiency will go up by almost 2kmpl. When the 6-speed AT-equipped Polo GT is driven equally in the city and on the highway, expect the figure to hover around 15kmpl.

Volkswagen offers the same engine-gearbox combo on the higher-spec Highline Plus variant as well, so you can expect similar fuel efficiency.

Do note that these figures may vary depending on the road, driving and climate conditions as well as the car’s health. If you own a Polo GT, please share your findings with us in the comments.
