Fiat Linea T Jet
The Italian Stallion

Fiat Linea is a sedan from Fiat that debuted worldwide in 2007 and was launched in India in 2009. When the Linea made its appearance in India it was powered by two engine options, 1.4 litre Petrol engine that makes 93PS of power and the renowned 1.3 Multijet Diesel unit that makes 90PS of power.

The Linea was performing pretty good but a few petrol heads wanted more power and found the Linea to be a bit less exciting for them. Fiat has introduced the Turbo Charged Linea named as the T-Jet. We put the new Fiat Linea T Jet through its paces to find out how the addition of the Turbo to the engine makes the difference. Read on to meet the real Turbo propelled Linea.

Fiat Linea T Jet Exteriors

The exteriors remain the same as the other variants of the Linea needless to say that the overall design is very classy. Don’t be mistaken and take the Linea to be the same Punto with an attached boot, the Fiat Linea T Jet is altogether a different vehicle. Beautiful Italian styling is very visible on the Linea from which ever angle you see it. I personally prefer the side view on the Linea.

Dimensions of the Linea are pretty large as compared to some of its competitors in the segment, with 2600mm of wheelbase and 4560mm in length putting the Linea in the VW Jetta category size wise. Upfront the sweet nose of the Linea reminds you of its family member, the Maserati. The sloping bonnet that mates with the silver air dam that extends right low on the bumper. The bumper also houses the fog lamps with silver garnish around it.

You can’t miss out on the large Fiat logo in red on the nose, besides the chrome band on the grille. A T-Jet monogram placed on the front grill boasts the Turbo charger that it now possesses. The well shaped parabola headlamps enhance the overall Italian look on the Linea. When viewed from the sides the elegant lines sweep from the Lineas bonnet to the windscreen adding to the already classy feels. A high waistline with sporty wing mirrors make things very interesting along with the low placed front quarter glass.

The Fiat Linea T Jet Plus comes with meaty 205/55 16incher sports 16 spoke alloys. The glass house on the Linea is big, making the interiors look and feel very airy. The slightly flared wheel arches give the much needed muscular touch to the car. Chrome strip runs across the Linea right from the bumpers to the door along with the chrome door handles adding to the exclusivity of the T-Jet. The rear section of the Linea blends in proportion and the flow design of the sides. Large tail lamps with crystal effect are placed on the waist high rear bumper.

The tail lid is flat but has a smooth round touch. Noteworthy here is the addition of hydraulic-gas supports on the boot lid. The T-Jet logo also makes its presence shown here along with the bigger Fiat logo in red. The Fiat Linea T Jet also gains a new sports chrome exhaust tip. The Fiat Linea has always been a very trendy car with typical head turning Italian design. Fit-finish and paint quality is very good.

Fiat Linea T Jet Interiors

As mentioned the huge glass area on the Fiat Linea T Jet makes the cabin look and feel very roomy and much larger than it actually is. The T-Jet Plus gets all leather upholstery that also includes the door pads. The front seats are pretty comfortable and the driver’s side seat has height adjust. A neat touch is the foldable centre arm rest that also has a storage bin in it. The leg room and shoulder room upfront is good while the head room is better than some of the Japanese rivals in this class. The rear seats offer ample support the back and thigh.

While two passengers can fit in very comfortably on the rear seat, a third can fit in after folding the rear seats centre arm rest. The dashboard is simple yet elegant with a chrome strip running across the dual tone dashboard. The meter dials are in a mix of dark and light silver shade with a chrome lining around them. All the important tell-tale warning lights along with the multifunction display in the centre of the console make things easier for you while on the move. The leather wrapped steering is chunky to grip and houses the steering mounted audio and Bluetooth phone controls. Height adjust on the steering is available but adjust for reach is sorely missed. The gear shifter is also leather wrapped.

Centre console on the dashboard house the single zone climate control and the MP3-Radio. Storage bins and glass-can holders are spread out all across the cabin. Audio quality on the radio and MP3 is good. The Fiat Linea was the first car in its segment to have AC vents at the rear between the front seats. We are told by Fiat officials that the AC unit on the T-Jet is an all new upgraded and much powerful one based on the feedback that Fiat received from its Linea customers and I can confirm this with the much cooler cabin experienced thanks to the all new AC. The glove-box is large but some of its storage space is taken by the main control unit of Blue and Me. Overall quality of the interiors is pretty good and so is the fit finish, leather use on the upholstery is of fine quality. Features like mobile connectivity via the Blue and Me and the rear AC vent make the Linea stand out amongst the rest of the cars in the same segment.

Fiat Linea T Jet Engine and Suspension

The Fiat Linea T Jet becomes the first car in its segment to get a Turbocharged Petrol engine. The 16 valve DOCH 1368cc FIRE engine is plunked with an turbo unit which now makes 114 PS at 5000 rpm and has very Diesel like torque figures of 207 NM at 2200 rpm. All of this is mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox. The 207 Nm Diesel CRDI engine like torque produced by the Fiat Linea T Jet makes it the best-in-class. The turbocharger on the Fiat Linea T Jet runs at 2.2bar. Fiat has also given the T-Jet a new compact aluminum cylinder head and tweaked up the valve train. The T-Jets engine also gets a double mass flywheel and low weight drive train to extract maximum power from this unit and compliment the Turbo charger.

Start the engine and you notice at once the high refinement and smoothness that it possess. Rev the engine and it touches the redline as most of the petrol heads desire. Shift to the first gear and the difference between the normal Linea and the T-Jet is most evident. The power is instant and the feel is very refined. This engine is highly responsive at any speeds making it a breeze to drive in busy traffic conditions. The gear ratios are perfectly spaced out to get the most out of the turbo engine while keeping it rev smoothly.

You can drive the Fiat Linea T Jet at as low as 20kmph possibly without any knocking or jerks thanks to the Turbo charger. Just to give you a small comparison between the regular Linea and the T-Jet Linea, the regular 1.4-litre Linea touches 100 kph in about 15.5 seconds while the T-Jet does the 100kph drag in 11.20seconds which is real quick for a car in this segment. The quick shift gear changer is a pleasure to use and it adds to the overall sporty feel of the T-Jet. According to ARAI the mileage figures for the T-Jet is 14. 6kmpl while we managed to get about 13kmpl overall which is good for a car its size. Body roll on the Linea is minimal and the feedback from the steering is tight and impressive. The drive on the Fiat Linea T Jet is very spirited and fast while the T-Jet feels safe and secure at all speeds. Safety features like Front two airbags, ABS with EBD, all wheel disc brakes and Fire prevention system are standard on the T-Jet.

The suspension setup on the Fiat Linea T Jet remains the same as the regular Linea viz. independent Helical Coil Springs with telescopic dampers and stabilizer bar at the front and rear but the T-Jet feels and drives a lot better due to the 16inche wheels and the meaty rubber.

Fiat Linea T Jet Verdict

The Fiat Linea was always a very good looking car, the CRDI variant is one of the better diesels in the segment, and now with the Turbo charged 114PS and 207 Nm Linea T-Jet Fiat has marched spot on in the Honda City territory. The overall quality and fit finish is much better than the earlier Lineas, fuel efficiency is also much better. At the heart is a very refined and powerful turbo charged unit that is super fun to drive at all speeds. Refinement level is high on the T-Jet while as with Lineas the Blue and Me and My Car feature come on the equipment list. The fun behind the wheel is high and the Fiat Linea T Jet is now a very viable choice for this segment and the other players might as well watch out for some stiff competition from this mighty Italian warrior the Fiat Linea T Jet.
