The Comet EV has been with us for 10 months, and it has proved itself to be a near-perfect city commuter
Saying goodbye to the MG Comet EV is not going to be easy, as it was our daily commuter for months, and driving in the city was never this easy. It has done more than 4000 km in the past 10 months, and while that might not seem like a lot, you have to consider that this distance was covered mostly in the city. So, after our experience with this tiny electric car, here is a brief long term review.
The compact form factor of the Comet EV makes it an ideal car to be driven on Indian roads. It is something we realised in the first few kilometres itself. On our narrow roads with countless numbers of cars just trying to get past each other, the Comet EV fits perfectly as it can get through traffic with ease and squeeze through narrow gaps.
The real world range of around 180 km also makes it appealing, because for a car which is only meant to be driven in the city, 180 km in a single charge can easily get you through the week. Even if you have to travel more than 50 km a day, you would only need to charge it twice a week. Also, because it charges to full overnight, it doesn't become a bother. And combine that with the low charging rates (if you charge it at home), you have a car which only costs you around Rs 1-2 per kilometre.
But while the Comet EV seems like a perfect city commuter, it is not. It is near-perfect, and a major factor which stops it from being the best is its ride quality. Due to its small wheels, and stiff suspensions, the Comet’s ride quality is not so comfortable, and if you live in an area with bad or broken roads, be ready to feel a lot of movement inside the cabin. However, in metro cities like Delhi or Hyderabad with good road networks, this will not be an issue that will pinch you daily.
For a car which is meant to be driven purely in the city, a more comfortable ride quality would have been better. It also has some ergonomic issues which we had discussed in our previous reports, and while it does have ample space to seat four passengers for short commutes, getting in and out via the front doors does become a hassle.
In conclusion, the MG Comet EV delivers on the promise of being an ideal city commuter, but it does that with a few hiccups. It is a great car to have if you travel a lot in the city, and it will make sure that you almost never get stuck in traffic, but to achieve that, you will have to compromise on the ride quality, practicality, and boot space. As they say, nothing is perfect in life and the MG Comet is anything but. However, despite all its flaws, there’s no other car that we’d pick to navigate the urban jungle; because at the end of the day, size does matter, and in this case, smaller is better.
