MG Comet EV: Long-term Fleet Introduction

MG’s quirky little Comet EV gives life to the drives in and around the congested streets of Pune

India isn’t for beginners. That statement becomes even more true in the case of Pune. The traffic is bad and there’s construction going on everywhere you pilot your eyes. Be it the metro work or road repair in general, commuting in and around Pune is a task with the already narrow streets becoming ever narrower. But thankfully, in my case, relief has come in the form of the MG Comet EV. That’s our new long-term car and I was quick to put my name down to use it for the first two months.

Finished in a clear Candy White hue, our Comet EV is the top-spec Plush trim, priced at Rs 9.98 lakh (ex-showroom). Is that price justified for a car this size? Or is the Comet EV just an overpriced urban mobility solution? That’s what we’re gonna find out in our time with it.

Attention Grabber

I love how the MG Comet EV looks. It has its quirks, but is unlike anything else on the road (quite literally). Everywhere I’ve taken the Comet, there are people pointing towards the car, admiring it or maybe just amused by the idea of it

For a car costing less than Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom), it sure does sport a host of modern and premium connected LED DRL light elements. The tall boy stance is hit or miss, depending on your preference, but is surely something that cannot be ignored. Call it cute, call it quirky, call it what you may, but the Comet EV is surely an attention-grabber.

Life with the Comet so far

Driving the Comet EV has been a cakewalk in the city. It fits into gaps I otherwise wouldn't have even thought of maneuvering a car in, and it has enough performance for all your city runs. I even drove it on a congested highway briefly, and came out rather impressed. The ride too, isn’t uncomfortable, provided you take sharp bumps and rough patches of the road at a relaxed pace. Surprisingly, it accommodates four adults rather easily as well.

Unlike driving it in the city, charging the Comet EV takes some planning. There’s no fast charging, which is a critical miss, especially considering that you have a real world range of around 180 km. This does limit the Comet’s useability and overnight home charging is your only best friend. For reference, using a 3.3 kW charger, it takes around 7 hours to charge the battery from empty. Even 10-80 percent charge takes around 5 hours, so charging it on-the-go isn’t too convenient.

If you don’t happen to have a three-point socket near your parking spot, MG does offer you a free wallbox charger. But that will have to be installed and you’ll be needing permissions from your housing society and/or landlord.

We’ve also come across a few irks with the steering-mounted controls wherein they don’t take any inputs for volume control or the playback of songs. There is also an issue with the L2 and L3 levels of the AC control and the same has been communicated to MG. A quick stop at the service centre should fix these, so stay tuned for updates on this front.

It’s still early in our time with the MG Comet EV. We will be doing some road trips to nearby locations and probably even some fun stuff with it. Given that the Comet is slightly different from the rest, would you like us to put it through a specific kind of test? Do let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for a more in-depth review of the Comet EV.
