Retaining the design of its predecessors, the third-gen Swift will feature Suzuki’s new 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbocharged petrol.

The brochure of the upcoming next-generation Swift’s Japanese version has been leaked online. The hatchback is slated to have its home country debut in the coming days, while the international market introduction is expected to happen at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March. A couple of weeks ago, the production-spec Swift’s front profile was also leaked on the Internet, while its spied images surfaced online earlier in March 2016.

As suggested by the leaked images, the third-gen Swift carries the design cues that were introduced with the first-gen model in 2005. And it’s not surprising, since its Mini Cooper-esque looks have charmed many.

That said, there are subtle differences, such as the new hexagonal grille, sharp-looking swept-back headlamps (possibly LED projector headlamps, like the Ignis), a dropped-down nose and pronounced wheel arches. At the rear, it still features vertically placed tail lamps, but they are more squared off now; and Suzuki has placed the rear fog lamp at the centre of the bumper, like its previous generations. The floating roof of the Swift has been accentuated with a redesigned C-pillar and the placement of the rear door handles alongside the window. The latter also gives it a three-door look (like the Chevrolet Beat).

Unlike the exteriors, Suzuki has completely redesigned the interiors of the new Swift 2017. It features a brand-new, flat-bottom steering wheel, a twin-pod instrument cluster and a large driver info screen (similar to the Baleno). It will come with the new Smartphone Linkage Display Audio (SLDA) (which will make its debut with the Ignis) that supports both Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto.

It is obvious that, after the Ignis, the next-gen Swift will be the third model to be based on Suzuki’s new platform that made its global debut with the Baleno (though not revealed yet). Engine options in Japan include a 1.2-litre Dualjet naturally aspirated petrol and the 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo petrol. The former will have a mild-hybrid tech (SHVS). The Indian version is likely to carry forward the same set of powertrains, but there is a probably that it might get an RS version in India, powered by the 1.0-litre Boosterjet.

Speaking of its Indian debut, it is believed that Maruti Suzuki will launch the new-gen DZire before the Swift. So, expect the 2017 Swift to launch around the festive season next year in the country.
