2019 Maruti Wagon R vs Tata Tiago: Variants Comparison

For every variant of the WagonR, there’s a closely priced Tiago variant on offer as well, but which one should you choose?

The third-gen Maruti Wagon R has been launched in India and it renews its rivalry against the likes of the Hyundai Santro, Datsun GO and the Tata Tiago. While we have already seen how it fares against the Santro (here) and GO (here) on paper, now it’s time to compare it with the Tata Tiago.

Dimensions:

• The Tiago is longer and wider than the Wagon R.
• However, the Wagon R 2019 has a longer wheelbase here.
• The Wagon R triumphs the Tiago in terms of luggage carrying capacity.

Engine & Transmissions

• While the Tata Tiago is available with a single engine, the third-gen Wagon R can be had with two engine options.
• The Tiago is the more powerful car here. While Maruti’s smaller 1.0-litre engine makes 17PS/24Nm less than the Tiago’s 1.2-litre unit, the 1.2-litre unit makes 2PS/1Nm less.
• Both the cars are available with 5-speed MT and AMT transmission options
• The Tiago is not only more powerful than the Wagon R, it has a higher claimed fuel efficiency too

Maruti Wagon R LXI(O) vs Tata Tiago XE(O)

Common Features

Safety: Dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, driver seatbelt reminder and front seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters.

Exterior: Body coloured bumpers

Comfort: Manual AC and power steering

What Wagon R LXI(O) offers over the Tata Tiago XE(O): Central locking, co-driver seatbelt reminder, speed alert system, rear parking sensors, front power windows and roof antenna.

What Tata Tiago XE(O) offers over the Wagon R LXI(O): Tilt-adjustable steering, corner stability control and multiple driving modes.

Verdict: Despite being more affordable, the Wagon R is better equipped than the Tiago. It does miss out on multiple driving modes and tilt-adjustable steering, but it is a fair trade off for the additional basic features on offer. The Tiago also gets corner stability control over the Wagon R, but it is more like EBD, which the Wagon R also gets. We will recommend the Tiago only if more than one people will be driving the car because it gets tilt-adjustable steering, unlike the Wagon R.

Maruti Wagon R VXI(O) 1.0L vs Tata Tiago XM(O)

Common Features:

Safety: Speed-sensitive door lock

Comfort: Central locking, front and rear power windows and tilt-adjustable steering.

What Wagon R VXI(O) 1.0L offers over the Tata Tiago XM(O): Co-driver seatbelt reminder, speed alert system, rear parking sensors, roof antenna, body-coloured door handles and ORVMs, full wheel caps, electrically adjustable ORVMs, Smart Dock 2-din music system with Bluetooth, USB and Aux, 60:40 split rear seats, day/night IRVM and remote keyless entry.

What Tata Tiago XM(O) offers over the Wagon R VXI(O) 1.0L: Corner stability control and multiple driving modes.

Verdict: The Wagon R turns out to be a more feature rich product when you compare its V(O) variant with the Tiago’s XM(O). For a premium of Rs 7,000 over the Tiago, the Maruti hatchback offers a whole lot of important features like rear parking sensors, day/night IRVM, a music system and keyless entry. And it won’t look like a stripped down variant either, since its door handles and ORVMs are also body-coloured. Although the Tiago gets multiple driving modes which the WagonR doesn’t, but the extra features make the latter our pick here as it offers better value.

Maruti Wagon R VXI(O) 1.2L vs Tata Tiago XT(O)

Common Features:

Safety: Rear parking sensors

Exterior: Full wheel cover, roof antenna and body coloured door handles and ORVMs.  

Infotainment: 2-din music system with Bluetooth, USB and Aux.

Comfort: Electrically adjustable ORVMs and remote keyless entry.

What Wagon R VXI(O) 1.2L offers over the Tata Tiago XT(O): Co-driver seatbelt reminder, speed alert system, 60:40 split rear seats, day/night IRVM and steering-mounted audio controls.

What Tata Tiago XT(O) offers over the Wagon R VXI(O) 1.2L: Corner stability control, follow me home headlamps and multiple driving modes.

Verdict: The price difference between both the hatchbacks is negligible and the feature list is also at par. With a 60:40 split rear seat and a bigger boot, the WagonR should be the pick for those looking for a versatile compact car. The Tiago is otherwise an attractive car with all the features it shares with the WagonR and the additional ones that the XT(O) gets over the WagonR 1.2 Vxi(O).

Maruti Wagon R ZXI vs Tata Tiago XZ W/O alloys

Common Features (over previous variants:

Exterior: Turn indicators on ORVMs,rear washer and wiper, defogger and front fog lamps.

Comfort: Day/night IRVM and steering mounted controls.

What Wagon R ZXI offers over the Tata Tiago XZ W/O alloys: Co-driver seatbelt reminder, speed alert system, 60:40 split rear seats, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and electrically foldable ORVMs.

What Tata Tiago XZ W/O alloys offers over the Wagon R ZXI: Corner stability control, follow me home headlamps, multiple driving modes and height-adjustable driver seat, adjustable front headrests and cooled glove box.

Verdict: For most buyers, we’ll recommend the Wagon R here simply because it’s a better and more modern package overall, compared to the Tiago. It’s more versatile, gets a usable convenience feature in the form of electrically-foldable ORVMs and then there’s the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system as well. However, we can’t discount the fact that the Tiago is quite a competent car as well. With adjustable front headrest and height adjustable driver’s seat, it’s the car to buy here in case you can’t get into a good driving position in the WagonR.

AMT Variants:

Maruti Wagon R VXI(O) 1.0L AGS vs Tata Tiago XTA

Common Features:

Safety: ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors.

Exterior: Body coloured bumpers, full wheel cover, roof antenna and body-coloured door handles and ORVMs

Verdict: The Wagon R continues to be our pick simply because it is better equipped on the safety front - it gets dual front airbags, which the Tiago misses out on.

Maruti Wagon R ZXI AGS vs Tata Tiago XZA

Common Features (over previous variants):

Safety: Dual front airbags and front seatbelt with pretensioner and load limiters.  

Exterior: Turn indicators on ORVMs, rear washer and wiper, defogger and front fog lamps.

Comfort: Day/night IRVM and steering-mounted controls.

Verdict: Since it’s the AMT variant we’re talking about, needless to say you’ll be in the driver seat most of the time and ease of driving is what you’re looking for. In which case, the Tiago will be the better car here. It’s got height-adjustable driver’s seat, adjustable front headrests and multiple driving modes too -- all driver-centric features. What you’ll miss is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, which is not a very big miss, considering the fact that you can rely on your smartphone for maps and music.
