2020 Honda City Won’t Get The 122PS Turbo Petrol In India

The India-spec 2020 Honda City will continue running its existing set of 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines albeit in a BS6 tune

The fifth-gen Honda City was recently unveiled in Thailand. Apart from the styling cues, platform upgrades and feature additions, one thing that stood out was the new 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that churns out better numbers than the 1.5-litre unit we get in India. Want this under the hood of your 2020 City? According to our sources, we won’t get it because Honda will carry forward the existing petrol and diesel engines as is, save for the BS6 upgrades.

The 1.0-litre (122PS/173Nm) unit comes mated to a CVT and delivers 23.8kmpl of claimed efficiency as per the Thai cycle. The 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine in India, however, puts out 119PS/145Nm and is available with a 5-speed MT and CVT option. The 1.5-litre i-DTEC delivers 100PS/200Nm and is only available with a 6-speed manual.

However, we can certainly expect a 1.5-litre hybrid powertrain on the City but only sometime after its initial launch. It will be the same dual-motor hybrid unit that debuted with the 2020 Honda Jazz, which was showcased at the 2020 Tokyo Motor Show. The details of the new hybrid powertrain are, however, not out yet. India introduction of the hybrid powertrain is expected earliest by 2021.

Honda might have decided to ditch the 1.0-litre engine from the City for India but it might make it to India after all. How? Well, to meet CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) norms that fall in place from 2022. The CAFE norms will require a higher average fuel efficiency from a car brand’s entire product portfolio. The engine might not find its way inside the engine bay of the new City, but probably with some other models.
