The third-gen i20 is expected to debut at the 2020 Auto Expo
- New Hyundai i20 spotted testing in India with rear disc brakes.
- The 2020 Elite i20 will get the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with a DCT from the Venue.
- It will also get the more powerful 1.5-litre diesel engine from the Kia Seltos.
- The lower variants are likely to continue with the 1.2-litre petrol engine.
- The second-gen model could remain on sale as a petrol-only offering as in the case of the Nios and Grand i10
The upcoming third-gen Hyundai i20 has once again been spotted testing in the country. The test mule of the third-gen hatchback features rear disc brakes, but they are unlikely to be offered with the production-spec model as the recently launched Venue, which is an SUV equivalent to the i20, or even the higher priced Verna do not offer the same. That said, the carmaker might offer them with its go-fast version.
Speaking of which, the 2020 Hyundai Elite i20 will get the option of the Venue’s 1.0-litre, direct-injected turbocharged petrol engine. The engine in the sub-4m SUV is rated at 120PS and 172Nm and comes with the option of a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic or a 6-speed manual. We believe that the i20 with this motor would come in a sportier avatar just like the Baleno RS, which does come with rear disc brakes.
Apart from this engine, the 2020 Elite i20 will also be getting Hyundai-Kia’s latest 1.5-litre diesel engine that debuted with the Kia Seltos. It churns out 115PS/250Nm and is coupled to a 6-speed manual or a torque converter automatic in the compact SUV.
However, it is likely to be offered in a slightly detuned state while still being more powerful than the existing 1.4-litre diesel (90PS/220Nm). The new Elite i20 is also likely to carry forward the tried-and-tested 1.2-litre petrol engine with a 5-speed manual. The standard petrol and diesel models should get drum brakes at the rear.
In terms of looks, the 2020 Hyundai Elite i20 will pack a more edgier and sharper styling as per the spy shots. The next-gen Hyundai Elite i20 is expected to be priced on par with the current version, which retails between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 9 lakh. It is expected to debut, if not be launched, at the Auto Expo 2020.
