The i20 and the Altroz are the only ones in their segment to be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options
Hyundai has launched the 2020 i20 in India at an introductory starting price of Rs 6.80 lakh. It rivals the likes of the Maruti Baleno, Toyota Glanza, Tata Altroz, Volkswagen Polo and the Honda Jazz. While we have already compared the i20 with the Baleno, let’s pit it against the Tata Altroz today and find out which of these two hatchbacks better suits your requirements.
Before diving into the detailed comparison, let’s take a look at their dimensions:
Hyundai i20 |

3990mm |

1775mm |
1755mm |
Height |
1505mm |
1523mm |
Wheelbase |
2580mm |
2501mm |
The i20 is longer and wider than the Altroz. It also has a longer wheelbase. In terms of height, the Altroz is taller.
Now let’s talk about engines. Both the hatchbacks are offered with both petrol and diesel engine options. While the i20 is available with two petrol engines to choose from, the Altroz is offered with a single petrol engine.

5-speed MT |
-
Hyundai’s 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine is the most powerful engine here. It also makes the most torque.
-
Where the i20 is offered with three automatic transmission options, the Altroz is available with a manual transmission only.
-
The i20 gets a CVT automatic with the 1.2-litre petrol engine where the 1.0-litre turbo is available with choice of a 6-speed iMT (clutchless manual) and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Hyundai is not offering an option of a manual transmission with the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine.
-
The 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engines have very similar power and torque numbers. While the i20 edges past the Altroz in terms of torque, the Altroz has an upper hand in terms of power output. That said, the i20 with CVT transmission makes 5PS more than its manual counterpart making it the second most powerful offering here.
-
Tata is also expected to introduce a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine on the Altroz soon. It is expected to produce around 110PS of power.
-
The Altroz is the only car here to offer multiple driving modes.

Both the hatchbacks are powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine.
-
The Hyundai i20, however, is the most powerful and also makes the highest torque.
-
While the i20 comes with a 6-speed manual transmission, the Altroz gets a 5-speed manual gearbox. Neither offers the option of a diesel-automatic.
-
The Altroz is the only car here to offer multiple driving modes.
Price Comparison: Here we will compare only the similarly priced variants of both cars, usually with a difference of upto Rs 50,000.

Verdict: The newly introduced Altroz XM+ variant is our pick. Despite costing less, the Altroz offers more features than the i20. The i20 does get some useful features like rear AC vents and cooled glovebox over the Altroz but the premium for these features is not justified in our opinion. The Altroz also gets ISOFIX child seat anchors for added safety.

Verdict: Priced identically, the Altroz is our pick over the i20. The i20 does get some additional feature comforts over the Altroz but they are not as useful as the features offered by the Altroz over the i20. A glaring miss for the i20 is the absence of ISOFIX child seat anchors at this price.
