The fourth-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift broke cover as a close-to-production concept at the Japan Mobility Show in October 2023. It was also spied testing on our shores for the first time recently. Now, the carmaker has revealed the updated engine-gearbox options of the Japan-spec hatchback which was showcased at the auto event.
A Fresh Take On A Known Powertrain
While the new Swift will still get a 1.2-litre petrol engine under the hood, the latest powertrain setup is a 3-cylinder Z-Series unit compared to the older 4-cylinder K-Series engine. The move from four to three cylinders, as per Suzuki, has been done to provide more torque at low speeds. That said, its exact output figures haven’t been disclosed just yet. The Japan-spec Swift will also be equipped with a CVT automatic developed to be lighter and to increase the fuel efficiency of the powertrain.
India-spec Swift's engine
For reference, the current India-spec Maruti Swift is powered by a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine (90PS/113Nm), paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. We do expect Maruti to offer the new India-bound Swift with both manual and automatic transmission options for the new engine.
In Japan, the fourth-gen Suzuki Swift will also be offered with a hybrid powertrain option and an all-wheel-drive setup, neither of which can be expected to arrive on the India-spec hatchback.
A Round Up Of Other Updates
The fourth-gen Swift’s India sighting has given us a cleaner look at its rounded grille with a honeycomb pattern, all-LED lighting, and new alloy wheels. All these details align with the model that has been showcased in Japan. Inside, it is likely to get the same black and beige dashboard layout as the Japan-spec Swift. It has the exact same steering wheel, climate control panel and instrument cluster as the Baleno and Grand Vitara.
In terms of features, the new Swift gets a 9-inch touchscreen system, push-button start/stop, cruise control, and auto climate control. Its safety kit includes six airbags, electronic stability programme (ESP), a 360-degree camera setup, and a suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The India-spec hatchback is unlikely to get ADAS features like adaptive cruise control, adaptive high beam system, and lane assists, but the test mules spied here were equipped with blind spot monitoring.

Launch And Price
We believe the new Maruti Suzuki Swift could land on our shores sometime in the first half of 2024, at an expected price of Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom). Its only direct rival will be the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, while the Renault Triber will serve as a sub-4m crossover MPV alternative at a similar price point.
