These MPVs may seem the same at first but are differentiated in terms of design, powertrain, features and more

Maruti Invicto, the latest offering and the flagship model of the Indian carmaker, has finally been launched. The premium MPV is essentially a rebadged version of the Toyota Innova Hycross, which is currently one of the most popular models from the Japanese manufacturer. However, even after being the same cars in most aspects, both take different approaches in bringing value to their buyers. Here are 5 key differences between the two MPVs:

Styling

From a distance, you might not be able to tell these two apart, but up close, there are some noticeable differences. Up front, the Invicto gets a different grille inspired by the Grand Vitara and differently positioned chrome elements. In profile, the Invicto only gets 17-inch alloy wheels instead of the 18-inch ones offered on the top variants of the Hycross. These alloys are also different in design. At the rear end, the Invicto gets Nexa-specific tri-element LED tail lamps and the ‘Hybrid’ badge.

Inside, the cabin looks nearly identical and the changes are only in the colour scheme. While the Hycross gets a chestnut brown and black cabin with silver elements on the dashboard, centre console and doors, the Invicto gets an all-black cabin with copper elements in place of the silver ones.

Features

The Invicto does not get any features over the Hycross, instead, it misses out on some of the more premium ones. The Maruti MPV gets a 6-speaker sound system instead of the 9-speaker JBL sound system offered on the Hycross. It also does not come with powered Ottoman seats which you get on the Hycross for added comfort.

But the most important feature missing from the Invicto is advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). With the absence of ADAS, the Invicto will not get safety features like lane-keep and departure assist, adaptive cruise control and auto emergency braking.

Powertrain

When it comes to what’s powering the MPVs, both have similarities and differences. While they both get a 2-litre strong-hybrid petrol powertrain (186PS and 206Nm) mated to an eCVT gearbox, the Invicto does not offer the regular 2-litre petrol engine present on the Innova Hycross. As a result, the Maruti MPV has a higher starting price than its Toyota counterpart.

Warranty & Service

Toyota, with the Innova Hycross, offers a standard warranty of 3 years or 1 lakh km and this can be extended to 5 years or 2.2 lakh km. In comparison, based on Maruti’s usual practice of standard warranty coverage, the Invicto likely gets a package of 2 years or 40,000 km and can be extended to 5 years or 1 lakh km. The battery of the hybrid powertrain has the same coverage of up to 8 years or 1.6 lakh km from both brands.

However, Maruti takes the lead in service with over 4,000 service stations across the country. Toyota on the other hand only has 587 touch points as of June 2023. This will create an advantage for Maruti as customers from smaller towns and cities will most likely prefer to buy a car that they can get serviced in their vicinity.

While the Maruti Invicto has a much higher starting price due to the absence of a regular petrol powertrain, the strong-hybrid variants are more affordable than the corresponding Hycross variants, which makes it more accessible with the same powertrain. Here too, there are some feature differences that you will have to check for to make sure you’re making the right choice.
