A new device has been developed by the scientists in America which can be helpful for the passengers in drawing the attention of cell phone yakking taxi drivers who are often observed in the habit of ignoring their instructions to turn into the directions – right or left. The new device will be placed on the steering wheel of any vehicle and will be touch-based. These devices would be able to pull the skin of the index fingertips of driver into the left or right direction as guided by the passenger or by the navigation system. Researchers who have developed this useful device stated that the main idea behind inventing this device was not to provide encouragement to the cell phone use when driving. In fact, this device was developed with the purpose of helping the hearing-impaired people and motorists for driving safely. The similar technology can also be useful for the blind people who walk with the help of a cane.

William Provancher, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Utah said that the technology can be really helpful for the blind people as their cane will have a button on the handle for providing navigation cues. Similarly, the hearing-impaired people will get the help in navigation as they will have information through their fingertips because of this device. Nate Medeiros-Ward, the co-author said that they are not saying that the people should drive and talk on a cell phone and that “touch” navigation will keep them away from trouble.

A study was conducted on a driving simulator in which two of the devices for conveying information by touch were attached to the steering wheel of the stimulator. It was observed that the two devices stretched the skin of the fingertips gently to the left or right direction as instructed. Another researcher of the study, David Strayer commented that this invention should not be used for encouraging the cell phone use while driving. But the device will surely help in providing directions.
