Honda entered into the small car segment in 2011 with the Brio hatchback and will be reportedly launching its next generation in 2017. Since its launch, the car has not been able to capture that market mainly due to its less than average interiors and the tiny boot space. Also, Brio only comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine which is also a reason why customers look towards diesel powered alternatives like Maruti Swift and the Hyundai Grand i10.
The new Brio will still remain in its segment but is expected to be priced slightly higher than the current car. It is likely to lose its large rear windscreen and also undergo some major design changes. The car will be based on the same platform but may have an all new body design. As of now, there has been no news on what will power the car. Honda will most likely retain the 1.2-liter petrol unit but add a 1.1-litre, three-cylinder, i-DTEC diesel variant . As for the transmission, the car should expected to be available with automatic gearbox along with the manual. With the all new design, the auto manufacturer might also drop the Brio tag and launch the car with an all new name. With the new offering, Honda will try and dominate the market but they have to be careful as they are going up against the well settled Swift and the popular Grand i10.
Honda Brio is currently priced at Rs. 4.2 - 6.8 lac, ex-showroom New Delhi.
