The new version features a sportier design language
The new-generation Toyota Camry will make its public debut at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show. Ahead of its reveal, Toyota has released a teaser image, showing part of the sedan’s rear profile, and boy, what a change it is!
Pictured here in the sporty ‘XSE’ grade, the Camry seems to feature a coupe-esque design, going by how the rear windshield swoops into the stubby boot. There’s a strong shoulder-line that blends into the plus-sized LED taillight and there’s a boot-lip spoiler too. Like we’ve seen from Japanese carmakers of late, it’s not a particularly subtle design and even has over-the-top elements like the air vents behind the rear wheels. That said, the new Camry is expected to get a performance-oriented set-up, though company officials are yet to divulge any technical details.
The new Camry is based on Toyota’s TNGA platform and, in all likelihood, it will be lighter than the outgoing model. We can also expect a wider range of connectivity options and improved efficiency from the powertrains, which may be reworked, but not replaced.
The sedan is one of Toyota’s global best-sellers and arch-rival to the Honda Accord. Currently, in India, it is offered in two iterations – the standard 2.5-litre petrol-powered version that makes 181PS of power, and the 205PS hybrid that uses the same petrol engine in conjunction with a 605V electric motor. Prices currently range between Rs 30.28-30.90 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.
While the new Camry will make its US debut in January next year, expect the Indian launch in early 2018, possibly at the Delhi Auto Expo.
