Suzuki Motors’ Alto is Rs 1 lakh cheaper in India than in China. While in China, the Alto is available between the price band of `3.2 lakh to `3.96 lakh, the same car in India, costs 2.4-2.8 lakh. Shinzo Nakanishi, MD and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India said that they are better than China in terms of operational efficiencies and the Alto is priced lower in India than in China. He also added that Maruti is Suzuki’s most efficient entity, making cheaper cars but offering higher profits to the parent company.
Every year, around 240,000 units of the Alto are sold by Maruti. The company is now targeting a monthly clip of 25,000 vehicles. Alto is the best selling car of India. The car is also a segment leader in China where Suzuki operates through a joint venture called Chongqing Changan Suzuki Automobile. However Mr Nakanishi did not throw any light on the profit margins on each car sold in China and India.
Last week, Maruti has launched the high-end Alto K10 which comes with the new K-Series engine and is available at a price range of `3.03-3.16 lakh. Also, in China, new variants of the Alto called the Alto Cool were launched by Chang'an Suzuki. These variants include the one with manual transmission at 3.65 lakh and the other with automatic transmission at 4.43 lakh. With its annual sales of more than 870,000 units in the last fiscal and cornering around 50% of the market, Maruti has now become an enormous powerful group in its 26 years operations.
