Like its topless sibling, the hardtop will feature cosmetic updates and a new petrol motor

Audi India is all set to launch its third new offering in 2017 and it will be the updated A3 sedan. Prior to this, the German carmaker launched the A3 Cabriolet facelift and the A4 executive sedan with a more powerful diesel motor. We’ve already driven the updated A3 sedan and you can read our review here. It is, as we know, the smallest sedan that Audi offers in India and with this update, the A3 becomes a lot more enticing.

In terms of looks, the refreshed A3 gets Audi’s new hexagonal front grille, new and sharper headlamp design, tweaked front bumper which houses slimmer set of air vents, restyled 16-inch alloy wheels and modified internal detailing in the tail lamps. Inside the cabin, you’ll find frameless interior rear-view mirror, an updated multimedia interface (MMI) screen and a new three-spoke steering wheel.

Under the hood, the smallest Audi can be had with either a diesel engine or a new petrol-powered one. The diesel engine remains unaltered and produces 143PS of power and 320Nm of torque. The new petrol motor is now a 1.4-litre TFSI unit, which is the same as the one found in the A3 Cabriolet. It is tuned produce 150PS of power and 250Nm of torque. While this engine produces 30PS less than the one produced by the 1.8-litre petrol mill, the torque figure remains exactly the same. The petrol motor will come mated to a seven-speed DSG transmission and the diesel mill with six-speed DSG.

Once launched, the updated A3 will renew its rivalry with its one and only direct competitor, the Mercedes-Benz CLA. Price-wise, the Audi A3 will fall in a similar price bracket as the Skoda Superb, which is between the Rs 26-33 lakh range.
