The second-gen SUV from Audi was launched in India at the beginning of 2018 and is not even two years into its product cycle. So, what’s changed?

  • Facelift features a revised front end.

  • Headlamps have been horizontally split into two.

  • Rear also features changes to the tail lamps.

  • Expect it to arrive in India sometime in late 2020 or early 2021.

  • Current Q5 retails between Rs 55.29 lakh and Rs 59.98 lakh (ex-showroom India).

German carmaker Audi is testing a facelift for its Q5 SUV. A prototype of the same has been spotted and we could make out from the pictures that the front fascia and the rear end of the Q5 is where all the changes are centred. This is also reaffirmed by the fact that only the front and the rear end of the SUV were covered with camouflage. The side profile of the current Q5 and the prototype looks similar.

At the front, Audi has made the grille wider and shorter. That gives an overall impression that the grille has shrunk in size. The design of the grille has also changed and now features a honeycomb pattern connected by horizontal slats. The overall shape of the grille looks octagonal, just like recent Audi cars. The headlights setup is also new. It looks like it has been horizontally split into two, one part featuring the LED DRLs and dynamic turn indicators while the other part works as a regular headlight. Audi seems to have tweaked the bumper too, to tie the front end together.

At the rear, the only difference that is easy to spot is the new tail lamps. While their shape seems to be similar to the current Q5’s tail lamps, Audi seems to have implemented new elements in it. These should be visible prominently when the tail lamps are lit. Apart from this, the entire rear section is covered in camouflage. However, it does not look like Audi has made any major changes to the rear section.

While we could not catch a glimpse of it in the pictures, we expect the interior to be similar to that of new Q7, where the infotainment screen has been integrated into the dashboard. The current Q5 features a free-standing unit that has been around for ages.

The Q5 is currently offered with a petrol and diesel engine in India. The petrol engine is a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit that makes 252 PS. The diesel is also a 2.0-litre unit that makes 190PS. Audi hasn’t given out any information about engines for the facelift, but we expect these two motors to be carried forward.

Currently, the Audi Q5 is priced between Rs 55.29 lakh and Rs 59.98 lakh (both ex-showroom India) in the Indian market. The updated Q5 is not expected to pack any major new piece of tech and thus we expect it to come in to the market at a similar price point, sometime in late 2020 or early 2021.
