Audi has announced to the global press that an all electric family car with a mileage of 280 miles is being developed in its stables. Technical development team boss Professor Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg revealed that the model will be launched in 2017 and will compete with the Tesla Model S. However it is yet unsure if the upcoming model will join the existing range of electric vehicles at Audi like the Audi A3 e-tron. Hackenberg mentioned that they reengineered the R8 e-tron project and technology with the team to achieve a range of 450 kms or 280 miles, and this technology will be carried over, becoming a trailer for another car with a long driving range; this will not be a sports car.
The 280 mile range is achieved by employing next generation of electric motors and batteries that feature higher power density. Head of Powertrain Development at the Volkswagen Group, Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neußer said “These electric motors are five times more effective than conventional motors used currently, like in the e-Golf”. Hackenberg didn’t divulge any details on the body style of the electric car, but being a family car we assume it will adopt a saloon body shape, allowing more space for storage of the powerful batteries under the car, as then it will not hinder or encroach boot or passenger space.
