Car Manufacturers Bajaj, Nissan and Renault will introduce a joint venture ultra-low cost car in India by year 2012. According to Renault, France based company, the car will be smaller than the existing Maruti Alto. In this joint venture Bajaj Auto will be handling manufacturing, sourcing, engineering and designing work while on the other hand Renault-Nissan alliance will be taking care of marketing and selling of the car in domestic as well as international market.
Mr.Katsumi Nakamura, Executive Vice- President of Renault Asia Africa Management Committee said that the car which was under discussion would be smaller than a small car. He further elaborated that there was no plan of manufacturing a car of 1.2L engine like Maruti's Alto. Mr. Rajeev Bajaj, MD, Bajaj Auto further added that the ultra low cost car would be having 70 to 80 percent components common with its two-wheelers and three wheelers.
The Ultra Low cost car was first scheduled to launch by year 2011 but because of difference of opinion among the partners Bajaj-Renault-Nissan the project got delayed. As the project is back on track now, it is expected that the car will hit the Indian market by year 2012.
