Yesterday had been a memorable day for the BMW India. BMW’s assembly unit at Sriperumbudur near Chennai in Tamilnadu rolled out the 20,000th unit yesterday. Almost a year ago, the same unit marked the production of the 10000th unit in November, 2010. Way back in 2007 BMW set up its manufacturing unit in Chennai. The company produces BMW 3-Series, 5-Series, X1 and the X3 SUV’s at its Chennai unit.
This assembly unit of BMW rolls out around 5,400 units in a single shift seamlessly with the help of the workforce of 400 employees accounting for approximately 10,000 units production during the past one year. The luxury car manufacturer which has established its presence in 140 countries globally and has 24 production units across the world has made a remarkable achievement where its India stance is concerned. The auto giant had toppled the Mercedes-Benz from the numero uno position sometime back and continues to rule the roost.
The German car manufacturer is on the brink of introducing its British subsidiary Mini brand in India. 2012 Auto Expo is the platform chosen by the luxury car manufacturer to introduce the Mini line up. BMW India president, Andreas Schaaf had spoken about bringing this iconic brand to India at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show held in September. Cooper, Cooper S and Countryman are the Mini brand products expected to make it to the Auto Exposition. However, BMW has some big plans in store for India. Apart from the Mini cars, BMW has a string of launch slated for 2012 among which the electric hybrid versions of the BMW 5-series and 7-series will also be a part.
