It's been a glorious five year run for the F10 BMW M5. To celebrate that, the automaker has unveiled a 'Competition Edition'. Essentially the last hurrah of the sports saloon, BMW will produce just 200 units of the car.

We all know what makes the M5 special - the drool-inducing 4.4-litre biturbo V8 motor stuffed inside the engine bay. For the special edition, power has been bumped up by a full 40PS, standing at 600PS! Torque sees a bump up as well, and is now rated at 700Nm (vs the standard 680Nm). The larger numbers on paper translate to a lower number for the 0-100kmph sprint, that comes up in just 3.9 seconds. The souped up specs are the result of a remapped ECU and increased boost pressure.

The optional 'Competition Package' is standard on the limited edition saloon. It includes a ride height drop by 10mm and a set of stiffer springs. The steering and stability control systems are tinkered with as well, to deliver a slightly sharper response. What's more, to get all of that go-power to a standstill, carbon ceramic brakes are part of standard equipment as well.

Aesthetic changes are minimal, yet enough to make the Competition Edition stand out. To begin with, the vehicle will be available in Carbon Black or Mineral White shades only, each limited to 100 units. Exterior updates include a carbon fibre lip spoiler, a reworked rear diffuser and gloss black grille and side vent. The massive 20-inch alloy wheels are finished in jet black as well to give it that extra oomph.

The interiors are finished in Merino Black and get contrast Opal White stitching. You also get an “M5 Competition 1/200” plaque sitting pretty on the dash. Other updates include a 1,200W Bang & Olufsen sound system, heads-up display, M multifunctional seats and lane departure warning.

BMW has chosen to turn up the heat on its upcoming arch rival, the E63 AMG. The battle of the super saloons is only going to get hotter, as the new M5 is all set to debut next year.
