Amongst various efforts towards a cleaner greener future, the govt. of India has made BS IV (Bharat Stage 4), the new Automobile standard. While most cars require minor changes in exhaust system and engine to be able to comply to this new standard, there are few aged yet popular cars that would be phased out in the process. The cars joining this league are Maruti 800, Skoda Octavia and Fabia (petrol), Chevrolet Tavera, Tata Sumo Victa, Fiat Palio Stile, Ford Ikon, Mitsubishi Lancer and Pajero, Ambassador, Hyundai Getz and Tata Indica.
BS-IV norms would be made compulsory in 13 cities including few metros starting from April 1st 2010. Although, most of the cars would be upgraded, in some cases the cost of up gradation is considered higher than the sales volume and estimated revenues from the same. Amongst the brigade, Maruti was the first company to announce the phasing out of Maruti 800. Many car majors seems to be following this suit.
These cars would be faded from the BS-IV complaint 13 cities initially, that would than be followed across India. Cities that are initially following this new norm suit are Mumbai, Delhi/NCR, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Kanpur, Ahmedabad, Surat and Agra.
The new Automobile standard is not only going to effect the Car owners and buyers but would also have a considerable impact on the fuel prices. According to BS-IV norms, the fuel should have a low-sulphur content, that would cause the petrol prices to be dearer by 50p and diesel by 26 paise with immediate effect. Indian consumers recently faced a price-hike in fuel prices this February, after which, these 13 cities are exposed to another axe on pockets.
Indian consumer would have only one plea to the government that in lieu of newer better rules and regulations, the impact shouldn't always pass on consumer's pocket.
