After multiple delays and a name change, Tata will launch its much-anticipated hatchback, the Tiago, on April 06, 2016. Originally called the 'Zica', Tata changed the hatchback’s name to ‘Tiago’ since the older name reminded potential customers of the deadly ‘Zika’ virus. Planning to buy one for yourself? Read on!
Features?
Looking at the segment, this car has loads of stuff to offer. Tata has been loading its cars with segment-first features of late. To begin with, the Tiago gets an 8-speaker, Harman-powered audio system, which also supports app integration. As of now, the system supports the Juke app and the Navigation app. While the Juke app allows passengers to create a playlist using songs from multiple phones, the Navigation app displays turn-by-turn guidance on the audio system’s screen. Besides this, it also comes with a large MID (Multi-Information Display) screen and offers driving modes such as City and Eco.
Coming to the safety features, it will have dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and CSC (corner stability control). However, Tata has not confirmed whether the safety features will be standard or not. Like most other manufacturers, we believe Tata will offer these as an option from the base variant.
Engines?
Tata is offering brand-new petrol and diesel engines with the Tiago. It also debuts a brand-new family of diesel engines for Tata, called ‘Revotorq’. The 1.05-litre Revotorq engine puts out a healthy 70 horses with a max torque of 140 Nm. This makes the diesel Tiago more powerful than two of its major competitors, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio and the Chevrolet Beat. The specs of the petrol engine are on a par with hatchbacks that are a segment above. The naturally aspirated 1.2-litre Revotron motor puts out 85 horses and 114 Nm of peak torque! Both the engines are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. We can expect an AMT in the future. We drove the car last year in December, here's a link to the road test.
Design
With the Tiago, Tata has also introduced its ‘Impact’ design philosophy. Future products such as its sedan sibling, the Kite5 and the Nexon compact SUV will follow the same design language. The Tiago looks like no other Tata car you have seen till date .The interiors look fresh and young as well. The cabin is modern and a little on the flamboyant side with the body-coloured pallets.
It is evident that Tata has put its heart and soul into making this hatchback. The rejuvenation spree that started with the Zest and the Bolt review has strengthened with the introduction of the Tiago. The automaker has paid attention to the little details and it shows in every aspect. This car has plenty of new stuff to offer, be it the engines, design or features. A lot is riding on this hatchback for the company. Let us wait and see how it fares in the segment.
