The newest entrant in India’s EV space is preparing to introduce its first SUV offering, the BYD Atto 3. It has now been spotted on the roads near Chennai with zero camouflage ahead of its expected market launch in October.
The Atto 3 is not an all-new product and the electric compact SUV is already on sale in select global markets. It is based on BYD’s latest electric platform, which focuses on improving safety and accommodating better space management for bigger batteries. The carmaker also announced plans to set up a facility in Chennai for local manufacturing to make its products more affordable.

While specifications for the India-spec Atto 3 are yet to be announced, BYD can offer it with the choice of two battery sizes - a 50kWh pack with a claimed range of 345km, and a 60kWh pack that claims 420km (both WLTP rated). The electric motor remains the same, making 204PS and 310Nm.

The Atto 3 will be a premium offering with features like a panoramic sunroof and ADAS tech, as seen on the model spied. Other features expected on offer are a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen, seven airbags, keyless entry and wireless charging.
The BYD Atto 3 is likely to have a starting price of Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom) and will be positioned as a more premium rival to the likes of the Hyundai Kona Electric and MG ZS EV.
