Cars will now communicate to avoid accidents

From now on, it would be possible to avoid disastrous accidents on roads through rash drivers, animals or any other danger with the wit and intelligence of cars. If you are surprised then do not be so because the trick lies in a chip. These special chips would be embedded in the cars so that they may emit a high frequency sound to the approaching problem. In fact, the chip manufacturers are trying their best to make cars communicate. This communication between cars can be a simple social one through Facebook or Twitter, or the warning signals from neighboring cars of a rash driver in the area close by. Though the Indian eco-system is not yet developed to facilitate highly sophisticated communication systems but these interesting features are being custom-made for meeting some special needs of an individual.

Ganesh Guruswamy, vice-president and country manager (India) of semiconductor firm Freescale stated that there  were several cases of accidents being reported in the US caused by deer crossing the paths of drivers. Due to the high intensity of the crash, the deer’s antlers stick right into the car, causing damage to the cars and drivers. Guruswamy was describing the reasons for custom-making chips which can emit high frequency sound on finding some sort of danger in the path of the car. But this communication among vehicles is possible only when  there is an open platform, where all vehicles can understand the communication signals that are being passed on. And for achieving this condition, the government participation is a must. Although it is a fact that such technology may take several years to arrive in India but the chip manufacturers are already busy in coming up with an open platform for vehicles to communicate.

Neeraj Paliwal, VP & India MD of NXP said that in this direction, several researchers have begun field trials for a strategic platform for intelligent traffic system (SPITS) in the Netherlands with the support of the Dutch government. A team which includes chip manufacturers like NXP and Catena, TomTom and GreenCat are currently working on a project which can track major parameters like spotting a car at a particular point of time, assessing the speed of the vehicle, how long it will take to go from one place to another and so on. Paliwal also added that with these parameters, drivers get warning signals displayed on their LCD panels if they cross the speed limits in a particular area.
