Key Takeaways
-
Maruti Suzuki maintained its lead with 2.6 percent MoM growth, supported by year-on-year (YoY) growth of 16.4 percent compared to August 2022. Maruti continues to sell more than 1,50,000 cars per month, which is more than the combined sales of Hyundai, Tata and Mahindra.
-
Hyundai showed steady growth with a 6.2 percent MoM increase, accompanied by a respectable 8.7 percent YoY growth. Hyundai has also introduced the new ‘Adventure Editions’ of the Creta and Alcazar, brought in the ‘Knight’ edition of the Venue during this period. The demand for the Exter is likely to have contributed to this MoM growth as well, helping Hyundai hold onto the position of the second highest selling car brand in the country.
-
Tata experienced a slight MoM decline of -4.4 percent and a YoY dip of -3.5 percent in August 2023 sales. This could likely be due to a drop in demand for the outgoing Tata Nexon, which will soon be launched in its facelifted avatar in mid-September. It has already been unveiled and you can find out more about it from our coverage here.
-
Mahindra's performance was stable, posting a 2.9 percent MoM growth and 26.5 percent YoY growth. The automaker sold more than 37,000 units in August, which is 7,798 units more than last year’s sales in the same month.
-
Toyota recorded a modest 1 percent MoM growth but stood out with substantial YoY growth of 40.2 percent compared to last year. Toyota also launched the Rumion MPV last month, which is the rebadged version of the Maruti Ertiga. The recent crop of shared mass-market products with Maruti have helped the brand get ahead of Kia for the second month in a row.
-
Kia faced an MoM decline of -3.9 percent and a significant YoY drop of -13.9 percent, selling over 19,000 units last month. The Korean marque has also updated the Sonet’s feature list, making its sunroof variant more affordable. Meanwhile, it recently launched the Kia Seltos facelift which is the brand’s best-selling model.
-
Honda had a remarkable month, showing a substantial 62 percent MoM growth while maintaining a stable YoY performance. The Japanese carmaker has now also launched the Elevate SUV in India, which is further expected to boost Honda’s sales going forward.
-
Skoda demonstrated steady growth, with a 2.4 percent MoM increase, aligning closely with its 2 percent YoY growth. It sold 133 units more than Volkswagen which is at the bottom of this list despite a YoY growth of 102.9 percent.
-
MG faced an MoM decline of -16.5 percent, despite a YoY growth of 9.5 percent, indicating short-term challenges. Selling over 4,000 units last month, MG fell from the seventh to the ninth spot in the monthly sales table.
