The entry-level luxury SUV space is exclusively German, at least for ICE options

Launched in 2018, the Volvo XC40 has concluded its five-year journey in India. The SUV received its final update in 2022 following the launch of its pure electric version, the XC40 Recharge. According to the carmaker, this decision was made based on the market response from customers for the EVs. Towards the end of its life cycle, the XC40 was priced at Rs 46.40 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India).

In the entry-level luxury SUV space, the Volvo wasn’t always the obvious choice but if you still want one with a petrol or diesel engine, you’re limited to the usual trio of Germans for those prices. Let’s take a look at those options:

Audi Q3/Q3 Sportback

Price Range: Rs 46.27 lakh to Rs 52.97 lakh

Audi Brings Second-gen Q3 To India, Prices Start From Rs 44.89 Lakh

The latest-gen Audi Q3 came to India in 2022 and is now available solely as a petrol offering. It is available in two body styles: the Q3 and the Q3 Sportback (SUV-coupe). The latter is exclusively offered with the top-spec Technology variant of the SUV.

Audi has equipped the Q3 with amenities like a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch driver’s display, dual-zone climate control, powered front seats, and a panoramic sunroof. Its safety package includes six airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system, front and rear parking sensors with a rear-view camera and ISOFIX child seat anchorages.

The Q3 uses a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine (190PS/320Nm) paired with a Quattro (all-wheel-drive) drivetrain. It is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT).

BMW X1

Price Range: Rs 45.90 lakh to Rs 51.60 lakh

BMW X1 18i M-Sport

The third-gen BMW X1 was launched in India at the start of 2023, and it is being sold in India as a locally assembled model. It is offered with both petrol and diesel engines with three variants to choose from: sDrive18i xLine, sDrive18d M Sport and sDrive18i M Sport.

Features on board the X1 SUV include a curved integrated screen setup (a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and a 10.7-inch infotainment system), 12-speaker Harman Kardon Surround Sound audio system, and active seats for the driver and front passenger. Passenger safety is taken care of by multiple airbags, cornering brake control (CBC) and ABS with brake assist function. It further includes driver-assistance systems such as lane departure warning and active feedback, front collision warning and manual speed limit assist.

BMW offers the X1 with a 1.5-litre petrol engine (making 136PS/230Nm) and a 2-litre diesel unit (150PS/360Nm), both paired to a 7-speed DCT. The former can go from nought to 100kmph in 9.2 seconds, while the latter does the same in 8.9 seconds.

Mercedes-Benz GLA

Price Range: Rs 48.50 lakh to Rs 52.70 lakh

Price for AMG GLA 35 4MATIC: Rs 63.50 lakh

Mercedes-Benz GLA Front Left Side

The current iteration of the Mercedes-Benz GLA on sale in India was launched in 2021 and hasn’t received any major updates since then. Meanwhile, the latest generation has made its global debut and is expected to come to India sometime soon.

The entry-level luxury SUV from Mercedes boasts amenities like integrated screen setup (10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment and 10.25-inch driver’s display), dual-zone AC, powered front seats with memory function, panoramic sunroof, 64-color ambient lighting. On the safety front, it gets seven airbags, electronic stability programme (ESP), and active brake assist.

Mercedes-Benz GLA also gets the choice of both petrol and diesel engine options: a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol (163PS/250Nm) and a 2-litre diesel engine (190PS/400Nm). The former comes with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT), while the latter offers an 8-speed DCT. The diesel powertrain is also available with an optional all-wheel-drive (AWD).

Unlike the other SUVs mentioned in the list, the GLA also gets a performance version, namely the AMG GLA 35 4MATIC. It gets the more powerful 2-litre turbo petrol engine (306PS/400Nm) which is mated to a 8-speed DCT.  It can sprint from nought to 100kmph in just 5.1 seconds.

Special Mention

Mini Cooper Countryman

Price Range: Rs 48.10 lakh to Rs 49 lakh

Mini Countryman Shadow edition

While not a typical SUV, the Mini Countryman is a potential alternative to the discontinued Volvo XC40. It is another relatively outdated model that made its market debut in India in 2018. It is available in two broad variants: Cooper S and Cooper S JCW Inspired. Recently, Mini has also launched the Shadow edition of the Countryman, which is based on the S JCW Inspired variant.

Its features list comprises 8.8-inch touchscreen, a powered tailgate, wireless phone charging, dual-zone climate control, and cruise control. In terms of the safety, it gets six airbags, 3-point seatbelts for all passengers, reversing camera, and cornering brake control.

The Mini Countryman currently comes with a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine which churns out 181PS and 280Nm. The unit is mated to a 7-speed DCT. It can sprint from 0 to 100kmph in 7.5 seconds. We know that Mini is going electric so the successor to this one will be an EV as well.

While these are your ICE alternatives to the now discontinued XC40, if you still want to buy a small Volvo SUV, you can actually choose from two EV versions of the same: the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, priced at Rs 56.90 lakh and Rs 62.95 lakh respectively (both ex-showroom).
