Prices are expected to start from around Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom).
We all know that Mahindra is extensively testing out the 5-door iteration of the Thar. In our latest and exclusive spy shots, we can confirm two important highlights of the SUV.
Based on our exclusive spy shots, the 5-door Thar will get a single-pane electric sunroof. This feature also confirms the presence of a full metal hard top, as a sunroof cannot be fitted to the composite roof seen on the current three-door model. The sunroof is positioned exactly between the two rows, which is quite unusual.

Other visual highlights of the extended Thar will include the stretched wheelbase, C pillar- mounted door handles, and a rear wiper mounted behind the spare wheel. The cabin is expected to look quite similar to the 3-door version, save for some feature additions that would be expected at the time of the new SUV’s launch. Some of the new comforts one can expect include an 8-inch touchscreen system with connected car tech and over-the-air updates, automatic AC, a rear parking camera, and up to six airbags.
Under the bonnet of the 5-door Thar should be the same 2-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines, though in a higher state of tune. In the 3-door version, the petrol engine is rated at 150PS, while the diesel is rated at 130PS. Transmission options should include 6-speed manual and automatic units on both engines. We’re expecting the bigger Thar to also be offered with rear-wheel and four-wheel drivetrain options.

The more practical version of the off-roader will launch in 2024 and will likely be priced from around Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom). Its only direct rival will be the upcoming five-door Gurkha, and it will also serve as a more potent and bigger alternative to the Maruti Jimny, another five-door off-roader.
