Figo demand jumps, Ford to increase production

The Indian unit of US based leading car maker Ford Motors, is planning to start a second shift at its Maraimalainagar plant near Chennai, to catch-up with the rising demand for its cars in India, said Michael Boneham, director of the company.
The Ford Figo model, which was launched in the month of March this year, is receiving a robust response in India with receiving bookings of more than 15,000 units in the period of just two months. Ford Figo is competing with popular cars in India like Maruti Swift, Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Fabia.
In the month of April, Ford India managed to sell 7,509 units of its cars in India as compare to the 2,034 units sold in the period of April 2009. Besides Figo, Ford India's portfolio includes Fiesta, Ikon and Endeavour models.
Company is happy to see the Figo sustain its momentum and create a new set of customers for Ford. Company is proactively preparing to meet up with the demand as it begin our second production shift starting June, said, Ford India President and Managing Director Michael Boneham.
Ford India's Chennai facility has a production capacity of one lakh units, and company is planning to increase it to two lakh units, as a part of the company's $500 million investment plan. Besides, the facility also has a capacity to produce 2.5 lakh units of engine per annum.
