The five-door Jimny is due for a launch in 2023, likely to revive the ‘Gypsy’ moniker in India
-
Size difference is not a surprise based on measurements of the three-door versions of both SUVs.
-
The elongated Jimny seems to have a smaller footprint than the Thar.
-
The SUV is expected to debut at Auto Expo 2023.
-
Likely to get the Brezza and Grand Vitara’s 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine.
-
Maruti will retail the five-door Jimny via its NEXA chain of showrooms.
-
Expected to be priced from Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards.
The five-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny has been spied yet again, this time alongside the three-door Mahindra Thar, giving us a fair idea of its comparative road presence. Its size difference doesn’t come as a surprise as its three-door versions also have a similar variation in proportion.
Details Of Spied Model
In the images, which were taken from the Thar’s cabin, we can see that the long-wheelbase Jimny is notably shorter in height and narrower too. Given that it is simply a stretched version of the existing three-door Jimny, these differences were to be expected. From the images available, the difference in the length of both SUVs is hard to discern, but it will likely be negligible as the five-door Jimny may be a sub-4m offering like the three-door Thar.
Looking at the comparative measurements of the three-door iterations of both models, the Thar is also going to have more road presence than the Jimny:

A Familiar Heart
Maruti is expected to provide the five-door Jimny with the same 1.5-litre DualJet petrol engine (103PS/137Nm) with the mild-hybrid tech, same as the Grand Vitara and Brezza. It should get two transmission options: a five-speed manual and six-speed torque converter automatic. Maruti will offer it with a four-wheel drivetrain (4WD) as well. The five-door Jimny might also be offered with a 140PS, 1.4-litre, BoosterJet turbo-petrol engine.

Launch, Expected Price And Competition
We are expecting the carmaker to reveal the five-door SUV at the upcoming Auto Expo 2023. The Jimny, which will be sold via the NEXA chain of showrooms, is likely to have a starting price of Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). Its competitors will be the five-door versions of the Force Gurkha and Mahindra Thar, both of which will be larger than the Jimny. We also believe that Maruti could take the opportunity to bring back its ‘Gypsy’ moniker with the SUV.
