Ford Fiesta AT petrol variant to get six-speed dual-clutch powershift automatic gearbox

While there were many speculations regarding the Ford Fiesta automatic sporting a six-speed dual clutch powershift automatic gearbox, Ford Motors seems to have decided to place the automatic version of the sedan in a different league. The Ford Fiesta Automatic will be the first sedan with the dual clutch powershift gearbox among the C segment cars to belong to more of Volkswagen Jetta and Skoda Laura of D segment. However, considering the price factor, Ford India has to restrict the dual clutch gearbox to petrol variant alone. With already expensive diesel technology, the dual clutch powershift gearbox will increase the Ford Fiesta AT price substantially to around Rs 11.5 lakhs making it more of a premium segment car.

The much acclaimed six-speed double clutch powershift gearbox is expected to boost the fuel economy of the car further. As it is the automatic transmission between the gears that enables the car to move at increased acceleration in comparison to the manual transmission due to its automatic adaptability. Moreover, at the top gears especially on highways, the higher acceleration can be attained despite the low rotations per minute (RPM), there-by decreasing the fuel consumption. In contrary to the older generation automatic gearboxes, the newer dual clutch automatic versions are found to be more efficient both on fuel economy and performance. This shift in efficiency is mainly observed due to the lighter built of the gearboxes and much faster transition among the gears.

The new Ford Fiesta Automatic is reported to have passed the tests in flying colours in the European markets scoring high on both fuel efficiency and performance. However, the sedan's performance on the domestic roads is yet to be seen.
