Ford launched commercial production of Figo model in India

Ford India Private Limited (FIPL), a fully owned subsidiary of US based Ford Motor Company, today launched the production of its much awaited small car model Ford Figo, at its Maraimalai Nagar production facility in Tamil Nadu. Mr M Karunanidhi, Chief Minister of the state inaugurated the production of Figo model which is expected to be launched in India by the end of this month. Ford Figo is company's first compact small car in India and it is expecting good response from middle-class buyers after analyzing the high sales of recently launched small car Chevrolet Beat in the country.

Ford India has signed an MoU with the government of Tamil Nadu in the month of September 2009, according to that the company would invest an additional amount of Rs 1,500 crore to expand its plant and facility in the state. The investment of Rs 1500 also includes the revitalization of its engine manufacturing operations of Figo model at the facility.

As the expansion process will be completed, the company has plans of recruiting 1000 employees which will take its number of employees in India to 3100 from existing 2100. Company is currently manufacturing its entry level sedan Ford Fiesta and Ford Ikon and a SUV Ford Endeavour at its Tamil Nadu facility.
