While the car manufacturers have been sending the warning signals of the impending price hike since last December, General Motors have found this a suitable time to implement the hikes. All the entry-level cars from General Motors right from Chevrolet Spark to its best-selling Chevrolet Beat and the only MUV from the car manufacturer, the Chevrolet Tavera price have been upped considerably in the range of Rs 3,000 to Rs 15,000 by 0.5-1.75 %, while the Chevrolet Beat diesel price got an immediate price hike pushing the extreme ends of range at Rs 15,000 back in December.
Most of the car manufacturers conveyed the possible price hike beginning from January 1st this year. But, fearing the competition and the slow car market, they held back the impending hike for a while. The higher input costs and the inflation has pushed the car manufacturers to take the action despite their own doubts which they hatched privately to have second thoughts on that front.
However, things began to look up since November when the car sales began to pick defying the predictions of the market experts. Car sales in December are stronger than ever growing by 8.45% over the corresponding time in 2010. While Maruti Suzuki India is another car manufacturer to take a bold step and see an upward revision of its car model prices, Toyota India and Hyundai India’s take on the price revision is still withheld. Company’s best-selling model and the largest seller in the hatchback segment Maruti Swift sees the maximum price hike with Rs 17,000.
