GM India mulls diesel variants of Spark and UVA

General Motors India is lining up most of its petrol cars with a diesel engine variant and is looking to enhance its diesel cars which are in great demand with the hike in petrol price; as a result the customers are looking for diesel – driven cars instead. The Indian subsidiary of General Motors is all set for the launch of Chevrolet Beat diesel this month and are likely to adapt the same with other petrol car models as well.

The President and Managing Director of General Motors India, Karl Slym has asserted that they will extend the diesel component to their car models if that is what the customers demand and they are willing to oblige and the same holds for other Chevrolet underpinnings Chevrolet Spark and perhaps Chevrolet Aveo UVA as well. He also expressed his belief that the difference between the prices of petrol and diesel which is now Rs 26 is likely to increase. He also said that as they cannot influence on the Governments decision on the petrol price hike, hence they are all geared up to meet the customers’ requirement to keep them satisfied.

The Talegaon plant of General Motors in Maharashtra is capable of building engines with capacity 1.5 litres and can be made available in both petrol and diesel variants. The latest model of General Motors India, Chevrolet Beat has 1 litre engine with three-cylinders that has been manufactured in this plant. The technology has been adapted from General Motors Europe to suit the Indian conditions and the Chevrolet Beat with Diesel variant is specifically made for India alone, which they might think of exporting it outside India as well, it has been designed to meet Indian car market needs.
