GM India to source 95% of components locally for new models

America based car manufacturer, General Motors is now focussing on localisation of its components for the new models of its cars. This would turn out to be a golden chance for domestic auto component makers as GM India will source a major chunk of car components from Indian market. Recently Renault also stated that they will concentrate on heavy localisation of their components.
Ashwani Muppasani, the Vice President (global purchasing and supply chain) of General Motors India told that the percentage of locally sourced parts and components in new vehicles can be as high as 95%. He empowered the SMEs (Small and medium enterprises) by saying that they should now stick to strict global quality and be certified for technical specifications (TS certified) meant for engineering industries. According to a recent study by Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA), the imports of auto components grew by 8.5 percent at $30.2 billion in 2010-11. General Motors India which is planning to bring many new cars after this.
