GM's small cars' engines to produce at its Talegaon plant

General Motors’ Talegaon plant will start production of its power train units from November 2010. The power train facility will manufacture 1.3L petrol engine for Chevrolet Beat and 1.2L petrol engine for small car models. At present the plant has a production capacity of 1.4 lakh units that will be augmented to 1.6 lakhs units later on. General Motors is also planning to manufacture 1000 cc and 1500 cc petrol and diesel engines specifically intended for compact cars. GM will plan to export the excess capacity to Asia Pacific region after the plant starts production.
The other option which company is considering is to selling engines to a third party and developing engines for Shanghai Automotive Industries Corporation’s (SAIC) light commercial vehicles after the plant is commissioned. General Motors aims to sell 5000 Chevrolet Beat units in India every month. The company will source engines for Chevrolet Beat,Chevrolet U-VA and Chevrolet Spark from its global manufacturing plants until its Talegaon power train facility involves fully into production.
