Government to bring in new energy efficiency star ratings for cars

The government is initiating to bring in the star labelling system in the automobile sector in order to conclude for strict fuel efficiency norms for cars in India. This new rating system will help the car possessors how eco-friendly their car would be. According to industrial sources, Bureau of Energy Efficiency(BEE) and the Ministry of Road and Surface transport have concluded with the Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency, which would allow the authorities to measure the fuel economy of the overall product line of the car marker.
BEE Director General, Ajay Mathur stated that they foresee a scope to enforce standards and labellings program for automobiles. He added that soon they would announce the standards and labelling programs for automobiles.
Elaborating on new labeling scheme for automobiles, Mathur added that the standards and labellings would be done for the automobiles which includes SUV's cars, other four wheelers. It excludes trucks and two-wheelers and said that as and when they will be done with the labelling process, they will begin with the process related to enhancement of fuel-efficiency of two wheelers and trucks.
Earlier the government launched the labelling scheme which covered a range of products including frost-free refrigerators, room air-conditioners, tubular fluorescent lamps, distribution transformer, direct cool refrigerator, Color TV's, induction motors pump sets, ceiling fans etc.
