The Indian unit of Japan based leading car-maker is ready to start the production of its India bound small car which was showcased as 'Honda New Small Concept' at the Delhi auto expo in January. The production work of this prospective small car of Honda will commence early next year which will be followed by its launch in the Indian and Thai market by March 2011.
The car is expected to be shelved in the price segment of sub Rs 5 lakh. After its launch in the Indian market, the Honda small car will compete against some of the most popular cars of this segment in the Indian market including Chevrolet Beat, Ford Figo, Volkswagen Polo, Nissan Micra, Maruti Swift and the upcoming Toyota Etios.
According to Mr Takanobu Ito, CEO and president of Honda, the car will be exported to other markets in the Asia-Pacific region. Though the car eventually could be built in Brazil but there are no immediate plans to sell the vehicle in the American market.
It is expected that Honda will follow the same trend of launching only petrol versions of its cars while debuting in the small car segment. The company currently sells some of the most popular cars in the Indian market including premium hatchback Honda Jazz, entry-level sedan Honda City, premium sedan Honda Civic, luxury sedan Honda Accord and Luxury SUV Honda CR-V.
