Hyundai i10, a hatchback from Hyundai has been extremely popular ever since it was first launched. The car presently available with Petrol variants would get a Diesel variant but that would now be delayed until 2013, sources said. Hyundai, the Korean auto-major has plans to launch the diesel variant of its most popular hatchback on the Indian roads, but has postponed the plans for at least another two years.

The Hyundai i10 Diesel model would have a localised engine as suggested by industry sources. Earlier this year there were news and speculations that Hyundai would launch the diesel variant of Hyundai i10 by the end of year 2010. Indian fuel prices are expensive and have been rising constantly. Under these circumstances most of the auto makers are moving towards alternate and cheaper fuels.

Hyundai i10 is most likely going to sport a 1.1 L CRDi engine, that would help deliver better performance and generate more fuel economy. In order to reduce the production costs the engine would be localised and sourced from the parent company. The manufacturing would then be done at the Chennai Plant of the company.

Apart from Hyundai i10, Hyundai motors are in lieu of introducing Diesel variants for Hyundai i20 as well. Fior this purpose the company plans to invest a roping Rs. 500 crore, in order to build a factory that would have a production capacity of 100,000. The investment would mainly be directed at the manufacturing of Diesel engines for Hyundai cars in India. Presently, Hyundai portfolio in India includes Hyundai Santro Xing, Hyundai i10, Hyundai i20, Hyundai Getz, Hyundai Accent, Hyundai Verna, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Sonata Embera, Hyundai Tuscon and a total of 35 variants in 6 passenger car segments.
