Hyundai introduces first ever pure electric car

The South Korea based leading car maker Hyundai Motor has unveiled its first ever fully electric car on Thursday. The car is expected to go on mass production by year 2012. The new electric car, (named as BlueOn ) has been developed on the platform of company's popular hatchback Hyundai i10. The electric car will be powered by SK Energy batteries and will have a power output of 16.4 kilowatts per hour. The BlueOn is capable of running as much as 140 kilometers on a single charge and carries a maximum speed of 130 km/h. The pricing details of this car is yet to be disclosed by the company.
Initially, the company will be producing this car in small numbers for government agencies by the end of this year. The car will go on mass production for general public by year 2012. The company has planned to produce 2,500 units of this car in the initial year of its launch for the general public. According to a statement given by a spokesperson of the company, it is a baby step taken by the company and there is no infrastructure such as charging stations in Korea and many other countries.
The BlueOn is one of the most fuel efficient and most sophisticated electric cars that are either under development or available for sale, currently. What gives it an upper hand over the other available electric cars in the market is the distance it is capable to cover in a single charge (140 kms). Mitsubishi Motors Corp, a Japan based leading car maker has recently launched the first ever pure electric car, i-MiEV in the Japanese market. Another Japanese car maker, Nissan is also developing a mass-market electric car that is expected to be launched in the US market by the end of this year. Moreover, a US based leading car maker Ford Motors is also planning to launch an electric version of its Focus model by the end of the year 2011.
