How is Hyundai planning to take charge of charging your Kona Electric?

  • Packs a 39.2kWh battery pack that claims to offer 452km of ARAI-tested range.

  • Hyundai offers a free 7.2kWh AC wall charger for home and a 2.8kW portable charger.

  • 50kWh DC fast charging available at select Indian Oil pumps and Hyundai dealerships.

  • Charging time: fast charging (0-80 per cent in under 60 mins), AC wall box (0-100 percent in ~ 6 hours) & portable charger (50km in three hours).

  • 3 year/ unlimited kilometres warranty and RSA on Kona; portable charging vehicle support in 4 major cities.

  • 8 years/1.60 lakh km warranty on the battery pack.

Hyundai India plans to take on the first mover advantage in the budding Indian EV market with the Kona Electric. Priced at Rs 25.30 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom India), the Kona Electric is the longest range pure EV you can buy in India. However, it is on sale in only 11 cities for the time being. Armed with a 39.2kWh battery pack, the Hyundai Kona Electric promises an enticing 452km of ARAI-tested range per charge.

What’s the charging setup?

For the buyer’s domestic usage, Hyundai will be offering a 7.2kW AC wall box charger which takes 6 hours 10 minutes for 0-100 per cent charging along with a 2.8kW portable charger that can be plugged into a regular wall socket to add around 50km of range in three hours and take around 19 hours to juice up the battery pack to 100 per cent. This charger will come in handy in case you get stuck out on the road without charge away from home.

Does it get fast charging?

If luck’s on your side, there could be a 50kW DC fast charging station near you as Hyundai will be setting them up at public points in major cities. These fast chargers will juice up to 80 per cent range in just 57 minutes and will be located at select Hyundai dealerships and Indian Oil Corporation’s existing fuel stations.

One thing worth noting here is that all the above times are just estimations. The charging speed depends on the condition of the battery pack, charger specifications, and ambient temperature. Thus, the time required for charging is bound to vary, especially in extremely cold weather.

How’s Hyundai going to support its customers?

Hyundai will be offering three years/unlimited km warranty and roadside assistance (RSA) on the Kona Electric whereas the battery itself gets an 8 years/1.60 lakh km warranty. For those sticky situations, Hyundai will also be offering a 24X7 emergency roadside assistance support. If you run out of juice a little too far away from a power socket, Hyundai will also dispatch a service vehicle charging support in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai.
